BTS are back and better than ever with retro-themed track #Dynamite; a celebration and tribute to legendary artists of the 60-80s. The all-English track is bound to be loved by BTS's large international fanbase, ARMY, who've already broken streaming and chart records.

I'm not one to stream songs on repeat for days on end, but #Dynamite has completely changed that. Since the introduction of the music video teaser, 'Dynamite' has felt like a delightful treat to escape from the nightmare this world has faced over the past months. The funky disco concept, centering around a retro-American theme, is uplifting and joyous. It's great to see BTS purposely leaving behind their heavier conspiracy theory filled songs, in exchange for a care-free, fun track.
The introduction of an all-English single is no surprise considering BTS's phenomenally large international audience and their signing to Sony Music-owned Columbia Records. Despite only having one fluent member (leader RM), BTS does a brilliant job at pronunciation and relays the song's positive message perfectly. However, the English track does serve one particular worry: BTS are at the point of becoming so westernised, possibly due to their Columbia signing, that they'll lose their differentiation from American artists/groups.

“[The inspiration for] it all began from this: even in the midst of hardships, we must focus on what we can do. This song goes to the ones who need encouragement. We hope people feel energised when listening to the song.” - BTS interview with Grammy.com
'Dynamite' feels like a fusion of famous songs and genres: from The Jacksons 'Blame It on the Boogie'-esque chorus, to the country tang on the 'Dynananana's', it's just a crazy mix of multiple music eras. The funky, groovy bass line layered throughout the track, alongside the rhythmic claps, is bound to get your body moving. The track is brought into full effect after the half-way point, when the brass instruments kick in and reignite the energy which diminished after Jimin and Jungkook's slow bridge. Many ARMYs listening to this track must be experiencing a John Travolta Saturday Night Fever moment when they hit play, the track just screams Bee Gees, Kool and the Gang, and KC & The Sunshine Band (i.e. DISCO!).
While BTS's rap line had a more subtle presence in the song (as expected, this track has no place for Cypher style raps), they surprisingly suited this concept perfectly. SUGA's line, 'life is sweet as honey', presented in that gorgeous raspy tone, and RM's megaphone PSA style line in the 2nd verse is super fun. The maknae line absolutely make this track, in particular Jungkook (who opens the track with his usual gorgeous vocals) and Jimin, who perfectly suits this fresh concept with his unique raspy Counter Tenor voice. Jin unfortunately doesn't get many lines in 'Dynamite', but he does shine through in centre position during the chorus.
The music video for 'Dynamite' is the cutest thing to come out of 2020 (which probably isn't too hard). Jungkook's set replicates a 60-80's mega-fan's bedroom, with posters of legendary artists such as The Beatles, Queen and David Bowie plastered across all the walls. It's heartwarming realising this current generation will already have this replicated with BTS and other K-Pop idol posters. RM's scenes in the record shop also display a sophisticated collection of vinyl records, like Wham's iconic 'Fantastic' album and Elvis Presley. Cleverly sitting amongst these iconic records is the US-exclusive Vinyl version of 'Dynamite'.
While the music video doesn't focus heavily on choreography shots, from what I can see, it's packed with references to iconic dance moves from a variety of eras. From Jin jokingly imitating Michael Jackson's moon walk, to the Elvis Presley style karate kick in the chorus, I've been super impressed by BTS's tribute/appreciation of the cultural icons who came before them and inspired them. Watch the MV for #DYNAMITE below (i.e. a sophisticated tribute to the 60-80s and disco):
I absolutely adore the simplistic vintage styling which has come along with this concept; the double denim, pastel coloured clothing, and vintage shirts/jackets suit the 60-80s feel. V's styling stood out amongst the rest, looking like a handsome 70s heartthrob rocking that phenomenal emerald 2-piece suit and striped tie. J-Hope, the fandom's fashionista King, also pulls off those yellow tinted glasses well; view below in the concept teaser images.
In conclusion, if you couldn't tell already, I LOVE 'Dynamite' - Go stream it!
